Every year on April 21st, Brazil observes a national holiday in honor of Tiradentes — a name many have heard, but not everyone remembers the full story behind it.

So, who was Tiradentes?

Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, best known as Tiradentes (which literally means “tooth-puller” — he was a dentist), was a soldier and political activist who became one of the main leaders of the Inconfidência Mineira. This was a movement in the late 1700s that opposed the heavy taxes imposed by the Portuguese Crown during Brazil’s colonial period. At the time, Brazil was still a colony, and the economic exploitation — especially in the gold-rich region of Minas Gerais — was intense.

Tiradentes dreamed of a free and fairer country. Influenced by Enlightenment ideas and major global movements like the American and French Revolutions, he joined efforts to organize a rebellion against Portuguese control.

Why is he seen as a national symbol?

Although the movement was uncovered before it could take off — and most participants escaped harsh punishment — Tiradentes became the only one sentenced to death. He was executed by hanging in 1792, and his death was used by the authorities to discourage further rebellion.

Over time, though, his execution took on a new meaning. Tiradentes came to be seen as a martyr for freedom and independence. When Brazil became a republic in the late 1800s, he was officially recognized as a national hero, embodying ideals of courage, resistance, and patriotism.

Why was Tiradentes called “Tiradentes”?

Tiradentes got his nickname because of his profession. Before getting involved in the Inconfidência Mineira movement (a colonial independence movement in Brazil), he worked as a military officer and as an amateur dentist — in other words, he pulled teeth!

Back then, there weren’t dentists like we have today. People with some practical knowledge would often perform dental work, and that’s how he became known. His real name was Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, but the nickname “Tiradentes” (which literally means “Tooth Puller”) stuck and became part of history.

Besides being a dentist, he also worked as a mule driver, miner, and political activist — and he is now considered one of the major symbols of Brazil’s struggle for independence.
