Movember is an annual event.

The movement encourages men to grow a mustache throughout the month of November, sparking conversations about these critical topics and driving efforts to improve men’s health worldwide.

Origins

The idea began with a group of friends in Melbourne, Australia. Inspired by a discussion about bringing back the mustache, a symbol of manliness that had largely fallen out of style, they decided to use the act of growing a mustache to raise awareness for men’s health. The name “Movember” comes from a blend of “mo,” short for mustache, and “November.”

The founders, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, wanted to do something fun while supporting a cause they believed in. After realizing that men’s health issues like prostate cancer were underrepresented in public health campaigns, they decided to turn their idea into a charity event. In 2004, they formalized their efforts by creating the Movember Foundation and chose prostate cancer as the initial cause to support. Participants, called “Mo Bros,” began growing mustaches and asking for sponsorships.

Purpose and Mission

The primary purpose of Movember is to “change the face of men’s health.” The movement concentrates on four key areas:

1. Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported approximately 1.41 million new cases in 2020. Movember’s contributions have significantly funded research for early detection and advanced treatments. As a result, the five-year survival rate for prostate cancer in developed countries has increased to nearly 98%

2. Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer predominantly affects younger men aged 15 to 35. While it has a high survival rate when detected early, awareness is crucial. Movember campaigns have focused on educating men about self-examination, leading to earlier diagnoses and improved outcomes.

3. Mental Health and Suicide Prevention

Movember promotes awareness around mental health issues, breaks down stigmas, and encourages men to talk openly about their struggles. The movement also supports initiatives aimed at preventing male suicides, as men are disproportionately affected by suicide.

Globally, one man dies by suicide every minute.

Men account for 75% of all suicides globally, with one man dying by suicide every minute. Movember has invested in mental health programs aimed at early intervention, community engagement, and reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues. Initiatives like “Ahead of The Game” focus on adolescent boys, promoting resilience and coping strategies.

4. Physical Inactivity

Recognizing the link between physical and mental health, Movember encourages men to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines to enhance overall well-being.
