Hyperfocus, a phenomenon commonly associated with ADHD

Hyperfocus, a phenomenon commonly associated with ADHD, has intrigued researchers for years, and those of us who are ADHDer’s. Whilst it’s paradoxical that individuals with attention deficits can focus so intensely, the science behind hyperfocus offers some fascinating insights into the ADHDers brain. Which is great when I’m aiming for hyper-focus, and wanting to understand everything there is about hyperfocus, but maybe remembering to eat or even just move around a little would be good.  

Basically, hyperfocus is believed to be related to dopamine regulation in the brain. Individuals with ADHD typically have lower baseline levels of dopamine, which is neurotransmitter essential for motivation, reward, attention,  therefore when ADHDer’s are engaged in something that is interesting and rewarding to us, there is a surge of dopamine, which then in turn leads to more intense focus and concentration, in other words this is a cycle with feeds itself.

So, dopamine deficiency also explains why ADHDer’s struggle to shift their attention from highly engaging tasks to less stimulating but necessary activities, the jury is still out on what is after all necessary. The brain becomes “locked in” to such a rewarding state, making it difficult to disengage, after all, who wouldn’t want to achieve this state, whilst maybe not at the Tibetan Monks level of hyper-focus, its still a great place to be.

But hyper-focus isn’t a super power that can be turned on or off at will, it’s less controlled and can occur even with activities that aren’t necessarily productive or beneficial.  However there is the possibility of training oneself to enhance and tap into this state, it’s fairly similar to the concept of the state of flow in psychology, which is encouraged, as both involve a deep absorption in a task, loss of self-consciousness, and altered perception of time.  

The intensity of hyperfocus can also be attributed to differences in the default mode network (DMN) in ADHDers brains. The DMN is active when the mind is at rest or wandering. In individuals with ADHD, there’s often reduced connectivity within this network, because of the way many of us were taught and encouraged to do things that in a neurotypical brain would be helpful, and therefore there is less connection with the DMN.  The reduced connectivity most likely contributes to difficulties in switching between tasks but also to the ability to become deeply engrossed in a single activity.

In all whilst hyperfocus can be a powerful tool, it’s important to note that it’s not always beneficial, and like many other things it requires training and effort.

Therefore it’s a double edge sword, the same mechanisms that allow for intense concentration can also lead to difficulties in time management and neglect of other important tasks or responsibilities, like, I don’t know, peeing?

Understanding the neuroscience behind hyper-focus can help us ADHDer’s, ADHDer’s families, and healthcare providers to develop effective strategies to really be able to tap into this state, harness productively while mitigating the potential downsides, like, I don’t know, a urine infection?

And let’s remove the superpower analogy, even though I have used it sparingly in the past, I’d like to move on and just normalize this into a state of being, rather than a vision of superman every time I manage to hyperfocus, and actually harness this ability productively. 

As research in this area continues to evolve, we may gain even more insights into how to effectively manage and utilize this unique aspect of ADHD cognition.
